The first thing to keep in mind when running out in cold temperatures is that the cold will feel quite different as soon as you are active. The key to a good running experience in the winter is the right clothing - not only on the feet, but also the rest of the body.
The layer-on-layer principle applies here. If you run in super fine merino wool, the wool's natural properties will help regulate your body temperature.
1. Protect the core
Be sure to protect the core with an extra layer. Especially for running in more harsh weather environments, we have developed Devold Running Cover, which will protect exposed areas and ventilate well.
2. Natural temperature regulator
If you stop for a break in biting cold, your body temperature will drop quickly. Therefore, wool is especially suitable for winter running. Ulla is a natural temperature regulator, transports moisture and will keep you warm even when you are wet.
3. Warm feet, hands, ears and head
Also, do not forget the importance of warming your feet, hands, ears and head. These areas are furthest from the heart, which means that it is extra demanding for the body to maintain good blood flow in these areas, especially when the blood is pumped to the large muscle groups to provide power for running. Gloves, headgear and socks are therefore essential for the good running experience.
Although it is tempting to wear a good and warm hat when leaving home, a light and temperature-regulating hat that keeps your ears and head just right is preferable. The activity warms you up quickly from head to toe - but the heat loss from the head is still great if you choose to drop the hat. Our headwear in the Running series will protect both the ears and the head, as well as make sure to transport moisture away from the head and regulate the temperature in the top lid.
4. Protect face and breath
The face is also very exposed when moving fast in cold temperatures - and now that the coronavirus has still not gone away with its ravages, you can also use the face mask for more. Devold Wool Face Mask is comfortable to breathe through and gives you much-needed warmth over your nose and mouth when you move fast in low temperatures.
In order to plan the clothing well enough, you can adjust the actual temperature in relation to the activity. If you run in 5 degrees Celsius, you can with a normal jog go adjust the temperature up by 10-15 degrees - as the activity level will make it feel as if it is 10-15 degrees warmer than it actually is. If you are going to perform a hard session with high intensity, you can add 15-20 degrees.
At the same time, you must always consider the wind conditions, and not just look at the temperature that the degree shows. In the same way that the temperature will feel higher during activity, the wind will give the opposite effect. Therefore, feel ahead before embarking on the run.
A smart tip is also to start the run in headwind if you return the same way, as the wind will feel extra brutal when you are wet and sweaty. Therefore, finish with the wind at your back.
Here in the north, darkness creeps in early in the day during the winter. It is therefore especially important to be visible in the dark when setting out on the run. The Running collection is equipped with reflective details on the inner layer, outer layer, gloves, hat, headover and headband.
